Health, Environment and Safety

Brick-World Zambia Limited is alive to the legal provisions that addresses issues of health, environment and safety, and we constantly endevour to adhere to all of the following key provisions; Factories Act, Environment Protection and Pollution Control Act, public health Act, Petroleum Act among others.

Issues of health, environment and safety are matters that involve human life, therefore as a Brick-World we take them very seriously. Brick-World will apply the following measures inorder to avoid any negative impacts of lack of proper HSE;

Construction Site

The working area site shall be adequately fenced with an approved fence and reasonably far from the water source to avoid water contamination.

Buildings

All our building designs at both temporary and permanent sites shall be subjected to approval by the relevant building department.
All sheds and offices shall have spoon drains all round.

Accommodation

labour camps shall have rubbish bays as approved by the Environmental Council of Zambia.
Labour camps shall have toilet facilities approved by the local authorities and one toilet shall be used by a maximum of 5 persons.

Community Education

{mosimage}In consultation with the health authorities the contractor shall carry out awareness education to the employees and surrounding communities on water borne diseases, Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. The sensitization will be carried through the following ways;

* Availability of promotional materials such as T-shirts, caps, stickers etc.
* Promotional events such as football matches to encourage openness and discussion of HIV/AIDS issues.


Petroleum Products Handling

Transportation

* All our fuels shall be delivered to site by certified petroleum tankers.
* All petroleum tankers shall observe the Petroleum Act, Cap 424 in regard to conveyance of petroleum products.


Storage

* Fuels shall be stored in skid tanks positioned in bund wall.
* Oils shall be stored in oil sheds with concrete floors.


Disposal

* All used oils and containers shall be dispensed in approved sites by the local authorities.
* All oils recycled shall be in compliance with the employer’s requirements.

Aggregate/Material Transportation

The height of loaded crushed stone aggregate shall not exceed haulage truck side.
Haulage truck carrying cement shall be covered.

Material Storage

* Stockpiles (outside sales) shall be located at reasonable distance from the water sources and cultural heritage sites.
* The stockpiles shall not be located in cultural heritage sites.
* Stockpiles shall have perimeter drains and buffer vegetation.


Mobile Equipment and Vehicles

All mobile construction equipment (owned/leased or hired) shall be fitted with the following whilst on construction sites:

* An operating revolving amber light whilst operating in construction area.
* A clearly visible red flag attached to an aerial.
* Approved roll over protection.
* Seatbelts to be fitted to all seats, including rear seats in troop carriers.
* Rear lights mounted to the top of the vehicle.
* Vehicles and mobile equipment shall not exceed the speed limit of 60km per hour on paved roads and 40km per hour on gravel road.
* Vehicles and mobile equipment shall be checked and maintained every frequently to ensure that they are in safe working condition.

Employees’ Protective Equipment

The workforce shall be provided with all personal protective equipment that include safety helmet, industrial safety eyewear, industrial gloves (when handling chemicals), ear muffs (in high noise area), safety footwear, high visibility vests, overalls and/or working suits.

Not foregoing the above PPE shall be worn in the following cases;

* Hard Hats: must be worn by all employees entering the mining area, ore processing plant, construction sites, stone crushing areas, loading stations, excavations and areas where falling objects can take place. Gloves: must be worn in the presence of sharp, hot and abrasive objects as well as areas when chemicals are handled.
* Spats: must be worn where there is the danger of molten metals or where cutting and welding takes place.
* Dust Masks: must be worn in the presence of irritating dust (such as crushing area), vapours or mists.
* Safety Belts: must be worn whenever work takes place in storage tanks, accumulation of water of unknown depth or where the depth is more than 1m or where height is more than 1.8m and where there is a possibility of a fall.
* Eye Protection: must be worn in mining areas, in presence of irritating dust, vapor or mists, when grinding, flamecutting, turning etc.
* Safety Shoes: must be worn in workshops, mining areas, construction area, generally at all times during working hours.
* Hearing protection: must be worn in areas of continuous or fluctuating noise such as noise from electric motors.

Noise Control

Noise from plant and equipment operations shall not exceed the limit of 90 decibels in human settlement.
Plant (e.g. generator) shall be noise masked.
Noisy mobile plant and equipment shall be fitted with exhaust silencers.

First Aid

All our employees shall undergo an approved basic first aid training. All our sites shall be equipped with at least 1 first aid box per 5 persons.

Fire Protection

All our sites will be supplied with fire fighting equipment. Each site shall have at least a 30m water hose reel and fire extinguisher.

De-vegetated Areas

There shall be no vegetation clearing near catchment area, wildlife habitats and cultural heritage sites.

Employee’s Conduct

No employee shall be allowed to work or operate any machine under the influence of alcohol or drugs or bring to work site any firearm or weapons. Any employee involved in any such unsafe practices during working hours shall be reprimanded sternly.

Reporting

All employees are required to report any faults or observed hazards to their supervisors for immediate remedy. The supervisors must work inconjunction with the HSE Manager in arriving at the appropriate remedy.

Health, Safety and Environment Personnel

The company employs an HSE Manager whose responsibility is to ensure that promote a culture amongst workers by training them. Further, the HSE Manager will formulate an effective monitoring systems and inspections. The HSE Manager shall be responsible together with crushing unit personnel to carry out routine maintenance and repairs every Sunday afternoon.

Safety Tips to All Employees:
It’s a requirement that all employees avoid unsafe or substandard acts, such as operating machine without authority, failing to replace guard, overspeeding, not wearing PPE, overloading and failure to follow procedure.

In addition workers should avoid substandard or unsafe conditions such as no guards around the tail end of a conveyor, defective tools, bad housekeeping, no warning signs on conveyors or equipments, noisy workplace, flooded workplace, inadequate or no light and ventilation.
